What is anxiety?

Anxiety- what is anxiety exactly? Per the American Psychological Association,

“Anxiety is feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” That is a boring definition".

Keeping it simple, anxiety is worrying about things that have not happened yet. When clients experience anxiety, I encourage them to practice,

“Facts vs. Feelings.”

When you experience anxiety, what facts do you have to support those feelings?

Ways to manage your anxiety with music

Did you know that music can help manage your anxiety? More specifically rap and hip-hop. A study conducted by Jefferson, Waddington, Johnson, & Ohrt (2025) showed that adolescents and adults who listened to hip-hop and rap reported more confidence, more self-awareness, and a decrease in anxiety symptoms.

Music is a great tool to combat anxiety symptoms. I encourage everyone to use music in their everyday life because it absolutely affects our moods. Music also has the ability to trigger positive memories with friends, loved ones, or experiences. While listening to your music, go outside and get some sun.

Music and the great outdoors are a prescription for wellness! Anxiety can be debilitating, but we do not have to succumb to those feelings.
